When "divide and conquer" isn't actually more efficient

Hi Reader!

Life with kids can feel like a marathon, but it’s easier when you have a running buddy. This week’s quick win is about body doubling—a strategy that turns mundane tasks into opportunities for connection and support. Let’s explore this together!

6: 👯‍♂️ Body Doubling

Body doubling is a common life hack recommended for people with ADHD to help regulate their attention, and it’s just as useful for parents with young children. It can be really tempting, when you have so much on your plate, to divide and conquer. Get it done quickly, right? But that isn’t always more efficient. Having someone with you, physically or virtually, while you tackle tasks can boost motivation and make chores more enjoyable.

Examples:

  • Partner with your spouse or a friend to tackle decluttering sessions together, and put on a good podcast or playlist to enjoy.
  • Call a friend on the phone while you fold the laundry. It makes the task feel less tedious and more social.
  • Exercise with your partner to stay motivated and make working out more fun. My husband and I exercise together every other night after the kids are in bed—one of us hops on the Peloton bike, and one of us takes a strength, cardio, or stretching class on the Peloton app.
  • Do the dishes or fold laundry with your partner, and make a rule that you can talk about anything except kids and career to focus on connection.

Ask yourself: How can you partner up on some household tasks more enjoyable and motivating?

Looking forward to sharing our next tip. Stay tuned!
